About Us

The Western Cape Older Persons’ Forum (WCOPF) was established in 2007 under the auspices of its parent body, the South African Older Persons’ Forum (SAOPF), and the department of Social Development in the Western Cape. The WCOPF was established to be the eyes and ears of older persons in the province. It is a registered non-profit organization which interacts with the SAOPF provincial government to ensure the needs of older persons are met and their rights protected.
WCOPF is actively engaged in:

  • Establishing regional, district and local forums throughout the province;
  • Lobbying the provincial government / government departments’ for the enforcement and observation of the human-rights of older persons;
  • Mobilizing older persons in the province;
  • Ensuring that Older Persons Act 13 of 2006 and other relevant legislation is implemented in the province;
  • Engaging with the SA Social Security Agency (SASSA) and other civil society organisations and government to improve the lives of older persons in the province.

The WCOPF was established to act as the voice of older persons and those organisations operating in the aged-sector in the Western Cape. The WCOPF is an umbrella organisation for all Western Cape stakeholders in the aged sector and is not a service provider. The purpose of the WCOPF is to inform older persons of their rights, advocate on their behalf and lobby for the observance and implementation of their rights.
